Assessment of the Limiting Equilibrium of a Slop

The authors consider practical issues of increasing the efficiency of construction on subsidence soils that have an unstable physical and mechanical form. Due to the fact that traditional experimental-theoretical methods and calculation methods were not enough to solve this problem, it was necessary to develop completely new methodological tools. A new method for calculating slope stability without introducing the shape of the collapse surface has been developed. This calculation method is based on the use of equations of the mechanics of deformation of a weighty soil mass with various options for taking into account the conditions of limit equilibrium. At the same time, the traditional way of solving this problem has been developed with explicit consideration in the deformation theory of plasticity of the limit equilibrium condition in the Coulomb-Mohr form. The finite element method has been adopted as a general methodological tool for determining the parameters describing the behavior of the geotechnical system «structure-soil». Analysis of the results of a numerical solution when modeling the interaction of a slope and a retaining wall showed that the most dangerous is the development of maximum horizontal displacements at retaining walls due to shear deformations.
