Lipid Imaging Inside Infrared-Transparent Microfluidic Channel Using Fourier Transform Infrared (μFTIR) Microspectroscopy

Several pathologies ranging from cardiovascular diseases to metabolic syndromes can be characterized by a high saturated lipids to unsaturated lipids ratio. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of Infrared (IR) micro-spectroscopy based chemical imaging to perform both imaging and saturated/unsaturated discrimination of lipids inside microfluidic devices. We present data collected for imaging lipids flown inside 9-micron thick IR transparent microfluidic channels in the form of whole liquid columns and lipid microdroplets using Fourier Transform Infrared (μFITR) Micro-spectroscopy imaging.
