Sensation and Functionality in Peripheral Nerve Injury: A Case Study
Introduction: Peripheral Nerve Injuries significantly impact quality of life and independence, affecting both movement and sensation. Reintegration into daily routines is particularly challenging due to changes in strength and sensitivity of the affected limb, which vary according to the injured nerve. While sensory re-education is recognized for its benefits, there is a gap in the literature regarding specific intervention protocols. Objective: To evaluate the impact of the "Sensory Discrimination Program" on the rehabilitation of sensory deficits in brachial plexus injury. Materials and Methods: A micro-level, multi-method case study focusing on an individual with carpal tunnel syndrome. Assessments were conducted at baseline, midpoint, and final stages, alongside 14 intervention sessions. Various evaluation tools were used, including the Mini Mental State Examination, a three-section questionnaire, Barthel Index, Lawton & Broady Scale, WHOQOL-Bref, and Semmes-Weinstein Monofilaments. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel (version 2305). Results: After 14 intervention sessions using the "Sensory Discrimination Program," positive results were observed in sensory rehabilitation for individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome, suggesting a broader impact on peripheral nerve injury rehabilitation. Conclusions: Despite positive outcomes, further studies with larger samples are necessary to reinforce the effectiveness of this program and support occupational therapists in similar cases.
