The Precipitation and Inhibition Kinetics of Mixed Carbonates in Ca-Fe-CO2-Na-Cl-H2O System with Various Ca/Fe Ratios

Abstract This study investigated the kinetics of CaCO3 precipitation in the presence of Fe2+ at 70°C under anoxic conditions (1M NaCl, pH 6.00–6.03) using a flow-through system with carbon steel surfaces. The primary objectives were to assess the effect of varying Fe2+ concentrations on CaCO3 precipitation rates, explore solid solution formation, and evaluate the role of mild steel corrosion in scale development. Findings indicated that Fe2+ had minimal influence on the precipitation rate but increased CaCO3 solubility. Evidence suggests the formation of a CaxFe1−xCO3 solid solution. This study provides valuable insights into carbonate precipitation mechanisms in CO2 corrosion, contributing to improved industrial scale management.
