Research Advances in the Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Kümmell’s Disease

Kümmell’s disease (KD) is a complex spinal disorder with an unclear pathogenesis. It results from the interplay between vertebral bone injury and the repair process, leading to vertebral ischemic necrosis and the formation of intravertebral pseudarthrosis. KD often follows osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) and is more common in elderly female patients. The presence of KD significantly impacts the patient’s quality of life and survival. In recent years, with the aging population, the incidence of Kümmell’s disease has been increasing. This article reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment advancements of Kümmell’s disease.
