Parking Utilization Analysis in Smart Cities: A Comparative Study of Intelligent Parking Systems

Efficient parking management is a cornerstone of smart city initiatives, addressing critical urban challenges such as congestion, inefficiency, and environmental concerns. This study provides a comparative analysis of parking utilization across five Indian cities: Chandigarh, Bengaluru, Indore, Ahmedabad, and Faridabad. The analysis focuses on three categories of parking—regular, electric vehicle (EV), and large vehicle—and employs MATLAB for visualization and computation of utilization rates. Results indicate significant disparities in parking demand and resource allocation, with Bengaluru experiencing the highest regular parking utilization and Ahmedabad leading in EV parking adoption. The findings underscore the need for tailored strategies, including expanded infrastructure, dynamic pricing, and real-time monitoring, to optimize parking systems. Additionally, the paper highlights Indore’s balanced utilization as a model for sustainable urban planning. By leveraging data-driven insights, the study offers actionable recommendations to enhance urban mobility and align with sustainable development goals. Future research is encouraged to incorporate real-time data and predictive analytics to refine strategies and evaluate their broader impact on urban ecosystems. This research paper provides valuable guidance for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders in creating efficient, accessible, and environmentally friendly urban environments
