Patterns of urban planning composition ideas for residential complexes and neighborhoods

It is argued that urban planning should be performed allowing for the main artistic and aesthetic criterion - the presence of a compositional idea organizing the entire structure. The meanings of urban planning concepts and approaches, and compositional ideas and techniques are considered. A typology of urban planning compositions is suggested for residential districts and large residential developments by type of the dominant element in the planning structure. There are four types of compositions in total: A. dominated by space, B. dominated by volumes, C. space and volumes are in equilibrium, D. there is no dominant element and compositions cannot be formed. Examples of compositions for each type are considered. Information on a number of urban planning techniques for organizing buildings and their complexes is provided. The essence of the nodal approach to planning a residential area is explained.
