A Perspective on the Transition from Traditional to Information and Communication Technology-based Teaching and Learning Approaches amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract Online learning was underutilized earlier, particularly in developing country like India. However, the contemporary emergency of the COVID-19 disease outbreak compiled the entire nation to depend on it for teaching, learning, and assessment activities. The COVID-19 disease made colleges and institutes close momentarily. The universities, schools, and colleges have ended confrontational teaching in this situation to maintain social distance. To avoid the negative effects on educational activities, various educational organizations attempted to find alternatives to deal with this critical situation. This closedown invigorated the growth of online education to facilitate uninterrupted education. This crisis has made the organizations accept the new technologies that were previously resistant to be adapted. Professional education, especially medical education, faced more challenges. It is estimated that with the employment of online learning, the roles of faculty members will change from the “traditional faculty-centric” to the “learner-centric model,” which in turn will set the newer curricula for all professional education. The present article aims at structuring the need, scope, mandate, objectives, and challenges for the employment of Information and Communication Technology-based learning, teaching, and assessment strategies and framing the tangible outcome of the same. Thus, it will contribute to the development of a planned strategy for efficacious implementation of e-learning, as well as visualizing technical advancement as a positive move toward change and evolution, which may support forthcoming ventures intended to implement online learning in many other situations throughout the teaching life.
