Interpositional Arthroplasty - A Novel Approach for Posttraumatic Temporomandibular Joint Ankylosis
Abstract Trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) can cause the debilitating condition known as TMJ ankylosis (TMA), which results in joint fusion and limited movement of the jaw. A thorough approach that considers the patient’s esthetic and functional needs is required for the condition’s effective therapy. This article is aimed at surgical management, supplemental therapy, and postoperative rehabilitation of a child with posttraumatic unilateral TMA. The preoperative maximum mouth opening of 24 mm was improved to 35 mm postoperatively following interpositional arthroplasty using temporoparietal fascia flap. There were no signs of reankylosis on 1-year follow-up.
