Exploring The Impact Of Social Anxiety On Sleep Quality And Insomnia In Undergraduate Students

The aim of the study is to explore the impact of social anxiety on quality of sleep and insomnia. It is a quantitative cross-sectional study design. 200 number of samples were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Social interaction anxiety scale, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, Insomnia severity index are the scales used in this study to determine the impact of social anxiety on sleep quality and insomnia in undergraduate students. A total of 200 participants with a mean age of 21.88 participated in the study out of which 117 were females and 83 were males. . In this study, 14 participants have good sleep quality while the remaining 186 participants have poor quality of sleep. The mean PSQI score for the same is 9.76. According to ISRS scale 55 participants don’t have insomnia while 70 participants have subthreshold insomnia and 69 participants have moderate clinical insomnia and 6 severe clinical insomnia which gives a mean ISRS score of 11.82. Among these 82 have no social anxiety; 34 have social anxiety to certain contexts and 84 participants have significant social anxiety. The correlation co-efficient (rho value) is 0.647 and the significance value (p value) is 0.000, for correlation between PSQI and SIAS. The correlation co-efficient (rho value) is 0.623 and the significance value (p value) is 0.000 for correlation between ISRS and SIAS. The correlation co-efficient (rho value) is 0.437 and the significance value (p value) is 0.000 for correlation between PSQI and ISRS. Therefore, there is a positive correlation between social anxiety, sleep quality and insomnia. There is a significant correlation between social anxiety ,sleep quality and insomnia. The rho value (ρ) is 0.647 and the ‘p’ value is 0.000 indicating a moderate positive correlation between PSQI and SIAS score which is statistically significant. , the rho value (ρ) is 0.623 and the ‘p’ value is 0.000 indicating a moderate positive correlation between ISRS and SIAS score which is statistically significant. And the rho value (ρ) is 0.437 and the ‘p’ value is 0.000 indicating a moderate positive correlation between ISRS and PSQI score which is statistically significant.
