Agent-Based Educational Model of Epidemic Spread in Anylogic by ROSMIM

Since 2023, the ROSMIM team has been engaged in the educational and outreach sphere, popularizing simulation modeling for everyone, simply teaching the implementation of the research method to schoolchildren and students. In addition to the theoretical base, presented in a unique form using the author's methodology, the authors of the project implement practical keys and develop technological models for interaction with the toolkit. The agent model "Epidemic" covered in this work allows those participating in the practice to understand how infectious diseases occur and evaluate the effectiveness of various approaches to combating them. The models include 5 types of agents: people, cities, airplanes, diseases and a vaccine. The purpose of creating such an "epidemic simulator" is to simulate simulation models of schoolchildren and students, demonstrate various phenomena in the development of criminal situations, as well as demonstrate the capabilities of AnyLogic software. Using the model developed by the authors' team, students master the techniques of analyzing complex systems, working with agent-oriented modeling and making decisions under uncertainty. The model is a simulator that allows not only to observe the development of events under various mechanisms of infection spread, but also to actively make decisions in real time: the user can close airports and introduce quarantine in individual cities, launch the development of vaccines. Depending on the chosen strategy and the speed of response, various outcomes are possible - from a large-scale spread of the virus with severe consequences for the population to successful vaccination and effective use of restrictive measures that minimize damage. This approach provides a deeper understanding of the results and effectiveness of decisions made. Based on the results of modeling for calculating the visualization of statistical data from the main agents, the model gives a complete picture of the events that occurred when the user used technical or other solutions at the time of modeling. Thanks to this interactive approach, which is actively promoted by the ROSMIM team, the processing of scientific materials is accelerated, it becomes possible to conduct computer experiments and analyze their results, which ensures a level of practical training.
