"We Have Become Well Acquainted with the Belligerent Nature of the Pacifists": Stefan Zweig's Pacifist Networks
Abstract: Stefan Zweig is known as a writer espousing humanist and pacifist worldviews. In both his essays and his short fiction, a clear rejection of violence, state coercion, and warfare can be found. This essay attempts to trace Zweig's international pacifist networks and to identify the ideological underpinnings of Zweig's pacifist thought by reading it within the context of Max Scheler's theoretical study Die Idee des Friedens und der Pazifismus . The article argues that pacifism, in the case of Zweig, is not a static and ideologically coherent concept but rather an evolving exploration of various political, philosophical, economic, and social outlooks.
