Der Weltautor als Netzwerker: Zu Stefan Zweigs intellektuellen Beziehungen

Abstract: This special issue of the Journal of Austrian Studies explores Stefan Zweig's role as a networker and his extensive intellectual relationships in the early twentieth century. This introduction examines the networking concept and shows Zweig as a master networker who corresponded with many of the leading intellectuals of his time. The contributions analyze Zweig's complex connections, including his relationship with Arnold Zweig and how both authors viewed the Soviet Union; Zweig's consequential friendship with the artist Ephraim Moshe Lilien; his multifaceted notion of pacifism and pacifist networks; his collaboration with the journalist Berta Zuckerkandl; his long-standing friendship with Max Brod in spite of the ideological differences between the two men; and his correspondence with the nationalist writers Franz Karl Ginzkey, Erwin Guido Kolbenheyer, and Max Mell. The special issue highlights Zweig's openness to maintaining relationships across the political and ideological spectrum, a rare quality in his time. Zweig's openness and his willingness to engage in dialogue remain relevant in today's polarized world.
