Applicabilité de l’estimation de l’âge par la méthode de Suchey et Brooks en reconstructions 3D surfaciques à la tomodensitométrie

Objective: to evaluate the applicability of the Suchey and Brooks method for estimating the age of adult individuals in the Togolese population using 3D surface CT reconstructions. Material and methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study over a three-month period from March to May 2023 in Togolese adults. Right symphyseal surfaces were isolated and edited using the "Scalpel" function. Results: Our sample included 72 straight, virtual pubic symphyseal surfaces, of which 31 were male (43.06%) and 41 female (56.94%), giving an M/F sex ratio of 0.76; mean age was 47.56 years, with a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 80 years, with a standard deviation of 16.65. The Mann-Whitney test indicated a significantly positive relationship between chronological age and estimated age according to phases of morphological change of the pubic symphysis for both sexes (male : p < 0.001; female: p < 0.002). Estimation of bone age using the Suchey and Brooks method in the Togolese population was correct in 81.94% of cases, i.e. 83.87% in men and 80.49% in women. Age was underestimated in 13.89% of cases (12.90% for men and 14.63% for women) and overestimated in 4.16% of cases (3.23% for men and 4.88% for women). There was a significant difference in mean age between the subjects in the Suchey and Brooks study and our own; the standard deviation increased progressively. We recorded the appearance of the right pubic symphysis in the Togolese population studied at each stage according to sex, and established an initial atlas for estimating the bone age of the Togolese population using 3D CT surface reconstructions of the right symphyseal surfaces. Conclusion: Suchey and Brooks' method can be reproduced with 3D surface reconstruction CT for estimating adult bone age in the Togolese population, but a study on a larger sample would be desirable to establish an atlas.
