Percepción de trabajadores sobre el uso de productos químicos en proceso de postcosecha de banano

The production and export of bananas constitute one of the main commercial activities in Ecuador. The study was conducted with the objective of determining the perception of workers regarding the use of chemical products in the fruit washing process during the post-harvest of bananas in banana farms in the canton of Caña Quemada, province of El Oro, Ecuador. A survey was applied to 211 workers in 14 banana farms, consisting of 15 questions, validated according to expert criteria. Data collection was carried out on the same day as the harvest and post-harvest process. Although the majority of respondents support the use of chemicals in the post-harvest of bananas, it is crucial to consider both the benefits and associated risks. Continuous education and research are essential to develop practices that balance productivity with sustainability and safety. The majority perception of respondents regarding environmental damage, groundwater contamination, and the impact on the health of workers and consumers is supported by scientific evidence. Soil and water contamination, the negative impact on biodiversity, and the accumulation of chemical residues are valid concerns that need to be addressed.
