The complex of fortune-telling bones from the Bishungarovsky burial ground (based on the materials of the works of 2024)
During the excavations of mound no. 12 of the Bishungarovsky burial mound (Karmaskalinsky district of the Republic of Bashkortostan at the left bank of the Belaya River, 35 km southeast of Ufa), a set of graves was discovered in burial no. 4, including 12 bones of medium-sized animals and birds. All the bones are healed and some of them have holes drilled. The bones belong to a hare (10), a fox (1) and a bird (1). The bones (all but one) were in a bag, traces of which were preserved along with a set of punctures, a spoon, and a stone spinning wheel made of bones. A roe deer’s leg was lying at the feet of the buried one. The burial dates back to the 3rd century BC and it belongs to the Prokhorovskaya archaeological culture. There are 10 more funerary sites with such sets in the Southern Urals. Similar finds were met not only among the nomads of the Early Iron Age, but also (to a lesser extent) in the burials of the forest-steppe population of the Early Iron Age and the Early Middle Ages. The most likely purpose of these dice is fortune-telling. Currently, the Bishungarovsky burial ground is the northernmost site with similar finds. Considering that in the sites of the nomads earlier than the IV century BC there are no such finds. This tradition may be an external borrowing.
