Evaluation of the presence of emerging contaminants in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Durango, Mexico

This study aimed to evaluate the presence and behavior of a group of emerging contaminants throughout a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Durango, Mexico. Nine out of thirteen emerging contaminants and some wastewater quality parameters were almost completely (100 %) removed in the secondary process. However, emerging contaminants such as DEET ( N, N -diethyl- meta -toluamide), ciprofloxacin, and triclosan were not removed with average residual effluent concentrations of 1.96, 1.33, and 0.75 ng/L in the sampling campaigns performed, indicating that the WWTP does not have the capacity to remove all emerging contaminants, which may represent a potential risk to the regional environment.
