The Role of the LCHF Diet in Weight Management: Mechanisms and Long-Term Sustainability
This review studies how low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet has gained popularity as a weight management strategy. This review examines the mechanisms underlying its effectiveness, including the induction of ketosis, appetite suppression, improved insulin sensitivity, increased thermogenesis, and reduced fat storage. By shifting the body's primary energy source from glucose to ketones, the LCHF diet promotes fat oxidation and weight loss. The high-fat and moderate-protein content of the diet also enhances satiety, leading to a natural reduction in calorie intake. However, the long-term sustainability of the LCHF diet remains a concern due to adherence challenges, potential nutrient deficiencies, impact on gut health, and social and psychological factors. Despite these limitations, the LCHF diet may offer additional benefits beyond weight loss, such as improved cardiovascular health, better blood sugar control, and potential neurological advantages. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects and safety of this dietary approach. Personalization is crucial to ensure that the LCHF diet is suitable for an individual's lifestyle, health goals, and long-term maintenance capabilities.
