Initial Developments of da Vinci’s Cube: An Expansion of Pasteur’s Quadrant
In 1997, Donald Stokes introduced Pasteur’s Quadrant, a model that classifies scientific research according to two axes: quest for knowledge and consideration of use. Here, we explore da Vinci’s Cube, which expands on Pasteur’s Quadrant by adding a third axis: contemplation of sentiment. We seek to understand how these three aspects relate to innovative organizations by analyzing interviews with industry professionals. We find that interviewees most frequently place themselves, their organizations, and their organizations’ hiring practices in the intersection between consideration of use and contemplation of sentiment and extrapolate that intersections between motivations are the most fruitful for these organizations.
