A New Transformerless Common Ground 5‐Level Inverter (TCG5LI) With Dynamic High‐Voltage Gain Boost and Fault‐Tolerant Capability

ABSTRACT This paper presents a novel transformerless common Ground 5‐level inverter (TCG5LI) that employs a single DC‐source switched–capacitor structure, providing dynamic high‐voltage boosting capability while requiring fewer power switches. This innovative topology significantly reduces leakage current from the parasitic capacitor of photovoltaic (PV) panels, thereby minimizing the common‐mode voltage. Additionally, the inverter’s fault‐tolerant design enhances reliability under conditions of power switch malfunctions. Mathematical analysis and circuit modeling in MATLAB/Simulink validate the inverter’s performance, revealing that it can achieve output voltage levels twice that of a conventional quadratic boost converter‐based inverter. To further verify its effectiveness, an 800‐W prototype was constructed, and a switching algorithm was implemented using an affordable Cortex‐M4 ARM microcontroller. Experiment results confirm the viability and performance advantage of the proposed topology.
