Fontan operation for severe right heart failure with protein-losing enteropathy for a child with left ventricular assist device
Right heart failure (RHF) is one of the major morbidities after left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placement. Possible surgical options for RHF after LVAD placement include adding a right ventricular assist device, converting to biventricular assist device, or performing a right heart bypass operation (performing Glenn or Fontan operation). Despite the fact that right heart bypass operation with right ventricle (RV) exclusion has been reported to treat RHF as the result of congenital heart disease,1 no case to our knowledge has been reported for patients with RHF who undergo LVAD placement.
