In the Standard Model (SM), the production of high mass dimuon pairs is dominated by the Drell-Yan process, which exhibits a strong forward-backward asymmetry. However, many scenarios beyond the SM predict different shapes for the <c:math xmlns:c="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><c:mrow><c:mi>cos</c:mi><c:msub><c:mrow><c:mi>θ</c:mi></c:mrow><c:mrow><c:mi>CS</c:mi></c:mrow></c:msub></c:mrow></c:math> distribution. In excess events beyond the SM, the angular distribution can be used to distinguish between those models. Abstract

This analysis uses the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) open data to study the angular distribution of high mass dimuon pairs produced during proton-proton interaction at a center of mass energy of 8 TeV. The study uses the <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:mi>cos</a:mi><a:msub><a:mrow><a:mi>θ</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mi>CS</a:mi></a:mrow></a:msub></a:mrow></a:math> variable defined in the Collins-Soper frame. The mono-<e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><e:msup><e:mi mathvariant="normal">Z</e:mi><e:mo>′</e:mo></e:msup></e:math> model has been used to interpret the data, and no deviation from the SM has been observed.
