One-dimensional porous photonic crystals comprising poly-vinyl alcohol-polymer doped with crystal violet and carbol-fuchsine dyes as a sensitive gamma rays dosimeter

Gamma ray dosimeters play a vital role in measuring radiation exposure in environments with gamma radiation, including medical settings, nuclear plants, and research facilities. Therefore, these devices must provide accurate and efficient measurements of gamma radiation, helping to safeguard individuals from harmful overexposure. By ensuring adherence to safety regulations, dosimeters reduce the risk of radiation-related health issues and maintaining safety standards as well. Therefore, we have introduced in this study a photonic γ-ray radiation sensor based on a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1D PhC). The alternate layers of sensor structure are made up of porous silicon whose pores are filled with poly-vinyl alcohol-polymer doped with crystal violet and carbol-fuchsine dyes and poly-vinyl alcohol-polymer doped with crystal violet and carbol-fuchsine dyes. The mainstay of this study is essentially based on the changes in both width and position of the emerged photonic band gap with the increase of gamma radiation dose. Notably, the indices of refraction of the considered materials provide some changes with the variation of gamma radiation dose. The numerical findings have been demonstrated based on Bruggeman's effective medium equation, transfer matrix method (TMM), and cubic curve fitting based on experimental data of refractive indices for the γ-ray-radiation exposed polymer sample. The sensing performance of the dosimeter is optimized by finding the most suitable values of the thickness of first and second layers of the structure along with porosity of the first layer and inner core radius. Meanwhile, the optimized structure achieves a relatively high sensitivity of 231.5954 nm/RIU.
