Fabrication of Endoscopy System-Based Handheld Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SoRS) Probe for Prospective Tissue Characterization

Cancer, a formidable adversary in medicine, continues to challenge healthcare professionals in the quest for early detection and precise characterization [1]. Superficial cancers, such as oral, cervical, gastrointestinal, and esophageal cancer, demand innovative diagnostic methods that are effective, low-cost, and minimally invasive. There have been various contact-based modalities for the characterization of the suspicious region of the cancer, such as High-Resolution Microendoscopy (HRME), Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS), Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy (DCS), Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a potential modality, offering higher sensitivity in cancer detection [2], [3]. However, the major challenge with Raman spectroscopy is the need for sophisticated equipment and high-resolution detectors to acquire various constituents' Raman peaks accurately.
