Design and analysis of high gain and high bandwidth SIW antennas for Ka- band and mm-wave 5G high band communication
Abstract A new slotted printed substrate integrated waveguide antenna (SIW) with shorted copper-filled vias and microstrip inset feed is proposed in this paper. The proposed SIW structure achieves the fundamental cavity by utilizing a copper-filled cylindrical vias, between the top and bottom plane of the structure. By optimizing the overall design, the structure, having SIW and dome-shaped stub (DSS) along with a square ring, has two resonance frequencies of values 28.6 GHz and 32.38 GHz with peak gain of 16.89 dBi and 10.53 dBi, respectively, containing efficiency of 91.14% and 88.21%, respectively, and it shows the fractional bandwidth of 3.14% for the first operating bands of 27.97 to 28.87 GHz and 22.97% for the second operating bands of 30.56 to 38 GHz. The structure’s bandwidth is enhanced by using the shorted via technique, which increases the structure’s bandwidth by 43.7% and provides a resonant frequency of 32.76 GHz, a peak gain value of 15.98 dBi, an efficiency of 87.22%, and a fractional bandwidth of 32.73%. The proposed design has a dimension of 24 × 24 × 0.787 mm 3 , which is equivalent to 0.2517 λ × 0.2517 λ × 0.0082 λ , where λ is wavelength of free space at the resonance frequency of 28.6 GHz and uses RT Duroid 5870 as a substrate having ε r = 2.33. The results of the suggested designs are validated through circuit-based theoretical analysis and a fabricated prototype. Investigation reveals that the proposed structures are suitable for Ka-band applications and mm-wave 5G high-band communication.
