Transforming Mukti: The Transformation of Pandita Ramabai’s Mission
This article considers how and why Pandita Ramabai’s mission transformed throughout her life. It argues that the intersection between Ramabai’s lifelong quest for mukti (liberty / freedom) and deepening Christian faith transformed her mission through four stages of her life. Between 1858-1883, Ramabai’s quest for mukti defined her mission and led her to embrace Christianity. From 1883-1893, her newfound Christian faith transformed her understanding of mukti . Between 1893-1905, Ramabai’s deepening Christian faith led her to famine relief work that brought Christ’s mukti to others. From 1905-1922, her mature Christian faith led her to testify to the mukti she discovered in Christ.
