Rare congenital vascular anomaly of iliac artery

Abstract Vascular anomalies of iliofemoral arteries are rare. They are detected incidentally or when patients present with complaints of limb ischaemia. We report the case of middle-aged woman with congenital anomaly of the left external iliac artery incidentally detected during the course of evaluation of pain abdomen. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed absent left external iliac artery and left common iliac artery, continuing as internal iliac artery. Recognition of vascular anomalies is crucial as these can predispose to thrombosis and aneurysm formation and to look for associated syndromes such as VATER or congenital cardiac defects. This reinforces the need to look for vascular anatomy in all cases irrespective of the clinical presentation.
