Decoding the symbolic storm fuelling Greek far-right politics: a visual essay

This visual essay interrogates how Greek far-right groups—Golden Dawn, Greek Solution, Victory, and Voice of Reason—deploy and distort visual imagery and accompanying discourse to propagate highly nationalist, Islamophobic, misogynistic, anti-LGBTQ+, and religiously conservative narratives. Employing a qualitative case study method that integrates visual content and discourse analysis, the study examines symbols, composition, and iconography alongside the provocative captions accompanying digital posts. In doing so, it reveals how these groups recontextualise ordinary images—ranging from isolated acts of violence to repurposed state documents and everyday classroom materials—transforming them into potent symbols of cultural conflict and exclusionary nationalism. This analysis contributes insights into the evolving tactics of far-right digital communication and the reshaping of political discourse in a contemporary sociopolitical context.
