Pandemic Peril: Ocular Mucormycosis in Patients During COVID-19
Abstract Purpose: To assess the symptoms, signs, and complications of mucormycosis in COVID-19 patients in association with diabetes mellitus and the impact on the life of the patients and also to alert the practitioners to detect it early and treat the complication. Methods: A hospital-based case series was done on ten patients who came to our hospital and were suspected to have rhino-orbital cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM). Anterior and posterior segment examination was done using a torch light, slit lamp, and indirect ophthalmoscope. Results: Among ten patients who were examined, patients who either had co-morbidities or were treated with immunosuppressive agents and steroids were found to have ROCM. Conclusion: The COVID-19 care team must be aware and enlightened about warning symptoms and signs of ROCM in order to educate the population and also to seek medical advice immediately and treat adequately.
