Assessing the Tenability Conditions in Mixed-Use Building Fires Under the Effects of Fire Suppression System and Fire Exit Door
In this study, a FDS modeling is presented to numerically investigate the benefits of fire suppression systems (water sprinkler system and fire extinguisher) and fire exit doors for occupant evacuation in mixed-use building fires. Various fire scenarios including residential fires and motorcycle fires are simulated to investigate the distributions of smoke spread, temperature, CO concentration, and visibility. Twelve cases are analyzed in which the tenability conditions are influenced including fire suppression system and door opened conditions. In this study, the indicators of Efectis Nederland BV[1] are used to display different fire scenarios. It is found that using water sprinkler systems/fire extinguishers and proper usage of fire exit doors in buildings can provide significant benefits for occupants' fire safety and evacuation within the building in the event of a fire. Moreover, the critical times for residential/motorcycle fires to reach occupant's fire safety criteria are studied, showing that the fire suppression system can greatly delay these times.
