Enhanced Postoperative Comfort in Pterygium Surgery: Sub-conjunctival Dexamethasone vs Normal Saline
Abstract Background: Pterygium is a degenerative condition of the conjunctiva that is more common in people living in hot climates due to exposure to the sun, dry heat, high winds, and dust. Objective: The purpose of the study was to compare surgical outcomes of graft harvesting during pterygium surgery using subconjunctival dexamethasone and normal saline. Patients and Methods: In this study, 60 pterygium-affected eyes were surgically treated. Participants were divided in two groups. In group A, patients’ conjunctival grafts were harvested using 0.5 ml of 0.4% Dexamethasone. In group B, patients’ grafts were harvested using normal saline. Results: Post operative discomfort, pain, and foreign body sensation was significantly less in group A patients compared to group B patients. Conclusion: Following pterygium surgery, the use of subconjunctival dexamethasone showed less patient discomfort and increased patient satisfaction.
