A Magnetoelectric Resonator Antenna for Super/Very Low Frequency, Dual‐Band Magnetic Transmission

Abstract Super/very low frequency (SLF/VLF) electromagnetic (EM) waves can propagate efficiently in harsh environments; However, the development of low‐power, portable SLF/VLF antennas remains a significant challenge. Here, a magnetoelectric resonator (MER) made of a ferromagnetic Fe–Ga alloy asymmetrically laminated with piezoelectric (Pb,Zr)TiO3 macro‐fiber‐composite (MFC) is reported, acting as a MER antenna (MERA) capable of transmitting SLF/VLF (247 Hz/13.06 kHz) dual‐band magnetic field (B‐field) signals through converse magnetoelectric (CME) coupling effect. An equivalent circuit and stiffness matching model are established to guide the design the bending and longitudinal vibration modes and the stiffness matching between the piezoelectric phase and the ferromagnetic phase. After optimization, the CME coupling performances are increased by 130% and 76% for bending and longitudinal modes, respectively. While the magnetic field transmission performances in the SLF/VLF frequency bands are enhanced by 62% and 31%, respectively. The developed MERA demonstrates a magnetic signal strength of 12.9 nT at 1 m, while consuming only 26 mW power, showing a magnetic field transmission capacity γB of 496 nT/W@1 m, approximately triple higher than the highest value previously reported. Overall, this research presents an effective strategy for enhancing CME coupling and improving the transmission performance of SLF/VLF dual‐band, low‐power consumption MERAs.
