Airmanship – the concept of modern aviation training

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the concept of Airmanship that was introduced relatively recently to emphasize the importance of professional development for pilots. It denotes aviation skills broader than just those classically understood. Design/methodology/approach A detailed analysis of the factors affecting aviation skills is conducted. Key pilot behaviors and activities that improve aviation skills and their importance for the safety of flight operations are considered. The most important analytical and decision-oriented approaches are discussed, as well as software tools that help assess the capabilities and skills of pilots. Selected results of their application are presented. Findings Technological development has caused that aircraft pilots have to deal with increasingly complex computer systems providing pilots with huge amounts of information that must be received and processed. This affects the pilots’ situational awareness and the way they make decisions. It has been noticed that incorrect operation in these two areas is the cause of so-called human errors, which has led to about 70% of aviation accidents in recent years. Originality/value Airmanship is a state that enables the aircrew to develop sound judgment, demonstrate strict flight discipline, effectively control the aircraft and conduct the air mission. It is maintained through continuous self-improvement and the desire to continually achieve optimal results. Discipline, skills and experience, deep knowledge, situational awareness, ability to make assessment, combined with efficient management of workload and resources, taking into account potential risks are the elements that make up the modern understanding of aviation skills.

It denotes aviation skills broader than just those classically understood. Design/methodology/approach A detailed analysis of the factors affecting aviation skills is conducted. Key pilot behaviors and activities that improve aviation skills and their importance for the safety of flight operations are considered. This affects the pilots’ situational awareness and the way they make decisions. It has been noticed that incorrect operation in these two areas is the cause of so-called human errors, which has led to about 70% of aviation accidents in recent years.
