Outside Back Cover: Accelerated Destruction of Passive Film and Microbial Corrosion of 316L Stainless Steel via Extracellular Electron Transfer (Angew. Chem. 21/2025)
Accelerated microbial corrosion and destruction of passive films on stainless steel caused by electroactive Shewanella oneidensis biofilms are reported by Dake Xu et al in their Research Article (e202425220). The changes in surface properties were verified due to the accelerated electrochemical reactions mediated by extracellular electron transfer (EET). Cytochrome proteins and electron mediators accelerate EET process and redox reactions at the interface between electroactive bacterial biofilm and 316L stainless steel.
