A Systematic Textual Analysis of Three Bandhas: Based on Insights from Jyotsnā Commentary of Brahmānanda
Haṭhayoga, as outlined in the ancient text Haṭhayogapradīpikā (15 th century CE) and expounded upon in the Jyotsnā commentary (19 th century CE), encompasses various practices, including Bandhas, which play a crucial role in the yoga tradition. This article presents the outcomes of a systematic textual analysis of the Jyotsnā commentary on the Haṭhayogapradīpikā, an endeavor not previously attempted, focusing on the role and benefits of Bandhas, particularly exploring their significance in Prāṇāyāma and the awakening of Kuṇḍalinī. In addition, it delves into the nomenclature of the three Bandhas, shedding light on their symbolic meanings. The technique of practicing Bandhas is elucidated, along with the relationship between breathing and the Bandhas, including the possibility of performing Uḍḍiyāna Bandha synchronously with the breath held within. Furthermore, the optionality of Mūlabandha and Uḍḍiyāna Bandha is examined. By synthesizing insights from these analyses, this paper aims to deepen our understanding of the practical applications of Bandhas within the contemporary yoga landscape, bridging ancient wisdom with modern practice. Moreover, it highlights the potential for mainstreaming these insights into yoga practice and research through the incorporation of Sanskrit textual study pedagogy.
