Low-tide Elevation-Based Quasi-Islands as a New Feature Type Eligible for Maritime Entitlements

Abstract Constructions on certain low-tide elevations (LTE) set an excellent example of countries using LTE reclamation and call for the novice thought of using the technology used since long to create artificial islands around the world to save the coastal nations from the evils of global warming, sea level rise and the consequent losses. Inspired by the innovative constructions done by various countries on LTEs, this paper puts forward a potential solution to the predicament by introducing a new epithet of “quasi-island”, which is simply a type of reclamation that has been created on an LTE with minimum human intervention. It then argues that such quasi-islands should be recognized as a new distinct type of feature and be granted maritime entitlements subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions.
