Synthesis and characterization of conjugated perylene-triazine based porous organic oligomer material and its application for iodine adsorption

• Establishing electron- rich porous organic polymer structured with Triazine , Perylene , and Diphenylamine . • Elevated surface area and good pore size of the synthesized oligomer . • Facilitated effective iodine uptake through vapour adsorption. • One of the promising materials for recyclability and strong reusuability shows superior iodine adsorption and environmental remediation. Porous organic polymers (POPs) have increasingly attracted considerable attention as promising materials for iodine adsorption and environmental remediation. In this work, we introduce an electron-rich porous organic oligomer (DPTP), featuring a donor-acceptor moiety and synthesized via a solvent-assisted polycondensation reaction involving triazine, perylene, and diphenylamine aldehyde monomers, achieving high yield through a simple method. The structure of DPTP was thoroughly characterized using FT-IR, ¹³C CP/MAS NMR, and other material analysis techniques. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis of the synthesized DPTP oligomer revealed a specific surface area of approximately 45.936 m²/g, with pore sizes ranging from 2 to 7 nm, demonstrating a predominantly mesoporous structure that facilitates effective iodine adsorption. Notably, the DPTP material, with high nitrogen content, exhibited an impressive iodine vapour adsorption capacity, reaching up to 210.14 wt %, along with an 84.5 % removal rate of iodine from hexane solution. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) images, taken before and after iodine adsorption, displayed slight structural changes, and elemental mapping confirmed the presence of iodine. Additionally, recyclability tests highlighted its strong reusability, showing superior iodine capture performance in both gaseous and solution forms. To facilitate practical applications, the oligomer was pyrolyzed for iodine adsorption in water. The carbonized material demonstrated excellent filtration properties, making it well-suited for environmental remediation of iodine contamination. Thus, DPTP oligomer stands out as an effective iodine adsorbent, offering a promising approach to address environmental challenges.

Abstract

• Establishing electron- rich porous organic polymer structured with Triazine , Perylene , and Diphenylamine . • Elevated surface area and good pore size of the synthesized oligomer . • Facilitated effective iodine uptake through vapour adsorption. • One of the promising materials for recyclability and strong reusuability shows superior iodine adsorption and environmental remediation. Porous organic polymers (POPs) have increasingly attracted considerable attention as promising materials for iodine adsorption and environmental remediation.
