FIXED WORD COMBINATIONS AS MEANS OF EXPRESSING CONTRAST IN MODERN PROSE TEXT (BASED ON DARA KORNIY’S NOVEL “TROJAN-HERB”)

The article explores the role of phraseological units in forming contrast in literary text based on Dara Korniy’s modern Ukrainian novel “Trojan-Herb”. The aim of this research is to determine how fixed word combinations create contrast in the novel, as well as to analyze the functional features of phraseological units and reveal their semantic potential in creating oppositions in the literary text. The main functions of phraseological units in the text have been identified: text-forming, characterforming, plot dynamization, and attraction. It has been discovered that the text-forming function of phraseological units as means of creating contrast consists in forming a coherent text structure through a system of oppositions at different levels of its organization; the character-forming function contributes to the characterization of personages, placing them on an evaluative scale from “+” to “-”, forming the system of images and creating an artistic worldview; the plot dynamization function intensifies the text, drives the action, facilitates narrative development at all levels; the attraction function draws attention to key moments in the text, emphasizes their importance in reception and activates perception. It is emphasized that all the discussed functions complement each other and only in cooperation form the artistic content, guarantee its delivery to the recipient, creating a multidimensional artistic space and facilitating comprehensive text perception. It has been established that phraseological units play an important role in forming both individual images and the general structure of the literary text. Based on the conducted research, a conclusion has been made about the significant potential of phraseological units in creating contrast and their role in revealing the author’s intention. The research results can be used for further study of phraseological units’ functioning in literary texts and analysis of means of creating contrast in modern Ukrainian prose.
