Hepatoprotective Activity of Patra Putapaka Swarasa of Vasa (Adhatoda vasica Nees.) and Bilwa (Aegle marmelos Corr.)

Introduction:The liver is a key organ that is essential for the excretion of xenobiotics. Hepatic conditions have become serious health issues and challenged health-care practitioners and pharmaceutical sector. Herbal medications are frequently employed because synthetic drugs are linked to a wide variety of adverse effects. Vasa (Adhatoda vasica Nees.) and Bilwa (Aegle marmelos Corr.) are widely used in Ayurveda to manage hepatic conditions. Thus, the current investigation was undertaken to evaluate the hepatoprotective properties of two formulations prepared from Patra Putapaka Swarasa (PPS) known as heat-infused leaf juice of Vasa and Bilwa against CCl4-intoxicated acute hepatotoxicity in albino rats. Methods:The PPS was extracted from the leaves of both the plants separately. Rats weighing between 150 and 200 g were split into 5 groups (6 animals per group), Viz. Control, Toxicated, Natural recovery, Vasa treated and Bilwa treated. The activity of both the plants was evaluated on serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase, total serum albumin, total serum protein, direct serum bilirubin, total serum bilirubin, and histopathological investigations. Results were evaluated by one-way ANOVA post hoc test using SPSS software. P < 0.05 was determined as statistically significant. Results:Animals were intoxicated with CCl4 (0.5 mL/kg) for 5 days followed by Vasa and Bilwa (4.32 mL/kg) orally for 5 days to respective groups. The SGOT, SGPT, and total bilirubin levels were significantly reduced in both treatment groups, and Bilwa produced better results as compared to vasa treatment group. Conclusion:According to the findings, the PPS of Vasa and Bilwa thus have a hepatoprotective effect.
