Utilizing musculoskeletal ultrasound in the identification of osteoid osteoma in a 19-year-old male military personnel
ABSTRACT Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK US) could be a powerful tool in suggesting the diagnosis of variety of conditions, including bone tumors. A patient presented with persistent, nocturnal lower right femur pain. Investigation was started with initial X-ray which suggested a stress fracture. But due to ongoing nocturnal pain, an MSK US was performed which revealed a hypochogenicity in the point of interest indicating a bone tumor. This prompted an MRI, which confirmed the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma. MSK US was pivotal in suggesting the presence of osteoid osteoma and ruling out a stress fracture, leading to accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. This case supports MSK US as a valuable tool in sport medicine for diagnosing conditions like osteoid osteoma, ensuring timely and accurate treatment.
