Acute effect of eccentric knee exercises on peak torque and hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio among athletes and nonathletes
ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to examine the effects of an acute bout of eccentric knee exercises on maximal isokinetic concentric peak torque of the knee flexors and extensors and the hamstrings-to-quadriceps (H:Q) strength ratio using an isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/s and at 90°/s among athletes and nonathletes. Materials and Methods: This study investigated 39 subjects which were divided into two groups, Group 1 (n = 19) athletes (mean age, 21.89 ± 2.62 years; height, 2.96 ± 0.25 m; mass, 66.52 ± 10.05 kg) and Group 2 (n = 20) nonathletes (mean age, 23.95 ± 1.73; height, 2.77 ± 0.30 m; mass, 60.12 ± 8.25 kg). The protocol consisted 2 sets × 8 reps Nordic hamstring exercise, 5 sets × 6 reps of reverse Nordics and lunges. Before and after an acute bout of eccentric knee exercise all subjects underwent for the assessment of peak torque and hamstrings-to-quadriceps (H/Q) strength ratio by isokinetic dynamometer at 60°/s and 90°/s in concentric/concentric contraction. Results: After an acute bout of eccentric training, peak torque and H/Q strength ratio were not significantly decreased (P > 0.05) in both groups. Conclusion: These findings suggest that an acute bout of eccentric knee exercise does not have any detrimental effect and can be used for rehabilitation in future for both groups.
