The Virtual Crossmatch: A Modern Sensitive Crossmatch Technique – Are We There Yet?
A BSTRACT Traditionally, physical crossmatch is a cell-based assay, which has been the gold standard for determining donor-recipient compatibility. However, these crossmatches have fallacies due to which donor-specific antibodies which are deleterious to the allograft can be missed. Advancements in human leukocyte antigen typing and antibody detection through solid-phase immunoassays have enabled the development of virtual crossmatch (VXM), a nonphysical alternative. While VXM offers speed, precision, and logistical advantages, questions remain regarding its reliability as a standalone test to immune stratify a patient for transplantation.
