Cognitive behavior therapy to increase self-esteem and reduce self-harm behavior
The issue of low self-esteem is a condition in which a person holds a negative view of themselves, feeling worthless and ashamed or hateful towards themselves. This study explores the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in increasing self-esteem and reducing self-harm behavior in adults through a single case study approach. The research subject is a 21-year-old individual with a history of low self-esteem and self-harm behavior. The CBT intervention was conducted over eight sessions, utilizing cognitive restructuring as a cognitive therapy technique and relaxation and self-control as behavioral therapy techniques. Data were collected through interviews, measurement of self-esteem using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and records of self-harm behavior before, during, and after the intervention. The results indicate a significant increase in self-esteem and a decrease in the frequency of self-harm behavior following therapy. Qualitative analysis also revealed positive changes in self-perception and the individual's ability to cope with stress. These findings support the use of CBT as an effective intervention for enhancing self-esteem and reducing self-harm behavior in adults.
