Quantitative phytochemical analysis of selected traditional medicinal plants in Bodla block, Kabirdham district, Chhattisgarh, India

The present study aimed to determine the alcohol-soluble extractive value, total phenolic content (TPC), and total flavonoid content (TFC) in selected medicinal plants, including Careya arborea Roxb., Terminalia chebula Retz., Shorea robusta C.F. Gaertn. The extractive values were determined using a methanol solvent. Total phenolic content (TPC) was estimated spectrophotometrically using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Total flavonoid content (TFC) was measured by aluminium chloride assay. The results showed that the richest source of alcoholsoluble extractive value, Total phenolics, and total flavonoid contents in Careya arborea Roxb. (belonging to the family Lecythidaceae) performed at 17.2%, Terminalia chebula Retz. (belonging to the family Combretaceae) performed at 118.885 mg GAE/g, and Shorea robusta C.F. Gaertn. (belonging to the family Dipterocarpaceae) performed at 70.23 mg QUE/g, as compared to Moringa oleifera Lam. 26.3%, 21.275 mg GAE/g, and 10.6 mg QUE/g. The result of the study highlighted that extractive value is useful in finding the effective solvent for the extraction process. It gives an idea about the nature of the chemical constituents present in a plant material. Extractive value is also useful for estimating constituents extracted with the solvent used for the extraction and the potent phenol and flavonoid in the plant extract and thus can be used to explore new drugs.
