Doubtful Weather: An Acrostic in Calpurnius Siculus 5.45–49

This note aims to highlight an acrostic spelling the word DUBIA in Calpurnius Siculus 5.45–49. I will argue for the intentionality of this wordplay, especially bearing in mind the context where it occurs and its vocabulary, as well as the poetic tradition, both Latin (Vergil) and Greek (Aratus), of acrostics.

Abstract

This note aims to highlight an acrostic spelling the word DUBIA in Calpurnius Siculus 5.45–49. I will argue for the intentionality of this wordplay, especially bearing in mind the context where it occurs and its vocabulary, as well as the poetic tradition, both Latin (Vergil) and Greek (Aratus), of acrostics.
