Programmable 2-bit Metamaterial for Beamsteering in Smart AgTech Applications

A programmable 2-bit metamaterial designed for smart agricultural applications is introduced, featuring a dynamic beam-steering capability at 5.3 GHz to allow precise field coverage for soil moisture assessment and crop health monitoring. The proposed metamaterial utilizes different PIN diode configurations to enable directional signal reception, supporting beam steering across an azimuthal range from -25° to +40°. Leveraging phase modulation and e-field effects on individual unit cells, the system optimizes array spacing to enhance signal adaptability. Integrated with minimal software hardware requirements, this versatile metamaterial efficiently collects data on parameters such as humidity, temperature, moisture, and crop ripeness from distributed sensors, enabling real-time decision-making. In addition, the solution offers improved field coverage and precision resource management, presenting a scalable approach to advancing productivity and sustainability in agtech.
