Some usage peculiarities of terminological units in audio descriptions of static objects

The article discusses some usage features of terminological units in the audio description of two- and three-dimensional static objects in the modern Russian language. The relevance of the research is due to the use of Russian-language audio descriptions – descriptions of two- and three-dimensional static objects – to contribute to solving the problem of constructing (including later automatic) high-quality and informative descriptions that take into account the correct use of terminological units. The paper analyzes the usage specifics of terminological units in the Russian-language audio texts of various two- and three-dimensional static objects – the types of terminological units, their frequency and compatibility with common lexis, correct / incorrect terminology are studied. A review of scientific and methodological literature has shown that while there is a sufficiently large number of scientific articles on the audio description in general, practically no attention has been paid to the issue of using terminological units when describing an object. It is argued that the correct choice of terms is the basis for successful audio description, and this choice depends on several key factors – the target audience of audio description (visually impaired or completely blind people, adults and children), the context, in particular, the type of object that is being described. No less important is the semantic and informational load of the term as a special lexical unit. In some cases, the analysis has revealed a fairly high density of terms, including highly specialized ones, which in some cases are fully or partially defined and deconstructed semantically. In other cases, when targeting a trained audience, the meaning of the term is not deciphered. In addition, terminology can vary significantly depending on the type of two- or three-dimensional object, such as a painting, architectural monument, or other museum exhibit, and may depend on the subject of the image. Among the typical errors in audio description in terms of terminological units use, the authors point out an overly general and subjective description with little or no terminology, insufficient specificity, little detail when using terminology units, inaccurate use of terms or the use of misleading/erroneous terminology units, the use of overly complex, highly specialized terms or a general excess of terminology without definition. The article concludes that there is a need for standardization of terms in audio description, which is manifested in the uniformity of terminology used, accuracy and clarity of the created description.
