Quality of Service Evolution and Enhancement for Holographic Video Communications Toward 6G
Holographic video communications allow users to experience three-dimensional objects that appear lifelike and tangible, potentially revolutionizing the way we interact in the 6G era. Today's 5G technologies have put a lot of effort into achieving better QoS for users in various use cases. However, holo-graphic video communications introduce unique challenges that demand even higher standards of QoS to ensure seamless and immersive experiences. This article outlines the foreseen issues in the 5G PDU session-based communication, heavy-weighted protocol stack, and coarse granularity in the QoS flow and PDU set-based QoS enforcement. It proposes new design principles and features for 6G architecture, including edgewise and distributed UPF, simplified user plane protocol stack enabled by end-to-end I P-native support, and user-oriented and finer granular QoS. Collectively, these evolution and enhancements are expected to elevate the user experience in holographic video communications, setting the stage for a new era of immersive digital interaction in 6G environments.
