Spectrophotometric Analysis of Dental Staining Induced by Different Pulpotomy Materials

Background: Pulpotomy is an endodontic procedure for primary and permanent dentition. Different pulp materials, such as calcium hydroxide and silicate-based materials are used in pulpotomy. However, tooth discoloration caused by these materials, particularly in esthetic areas, remains a significant concern. Aim: This study aims to perform an in vitro spectrophotometric analysis of the tooth color change induced by the placement of different pulpotomy materials. Materials and Methods: This study used 50 extracted human premolars divided into five groups of pulp materials (control, ProRoot mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA], NeoMTA, Intermediate Restorative Material [IRM], and Biodentine), each with ten teeth. The shade was determined by the five measurements: One before tooth preparation, one after tooth preparation and material placement, and three measurements taken at 1-month intervals. Statistical Analysis: The statistical tests used were the two-factor ANOVA test and the Tukey test, which allowed the multiple comparisons of the ΔE parameter between the different groups and within the same group as a function of time. Results: At day 30, there was a statistically significant difference between the control group and the NeoMTA ( P = 0.0016), IRM ( P = 0.0063), and Biodentine™ ( P = 0.0092) groups. From day 60, the MTA group also showed a statistically significant difference between the Biodentine™ group ( P = 0.0042) and the Neo-MTA group ( P = 0.0047). Conclusions: Dental esthetics is essential to our daily lives, and endodontic procedures can negatively impact it. Therefore, continuing studies are imperative to perfect materials with superior biological performance and stable, long-lasting esthetics.
