Assessment of Safety of 6′-Sialyllactose (6’-SL) Sodium Salt Produced by Derivative Strains of Escherichia Coli BL21 (DE3) for a New Authorisation (RP2114)

Chr. Hansen, Denmark (“the applicant”) submitted a novel food application for a new authorisation of 6′-sialyllactose (6’-SL) sodium salt as a novel food to each nation of Great Britain in 2023. This new application is seeking to use the novel food within the following food categories including: • Infant and follow-on formula; • foods for infants and young children; • Processed cereal-based food and baby food for infants and young children • Milk-based drinks and similar products intended for young children • Foods for infants and young children for special medical purposes • Foods for special medical purposes excluding food for infants and young children; • Food supplements. This novel food had its application for authorisation assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) which was published in 2022. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have reviewed the information available, including the EFSA opinion, and confirmed that 6’-SL was safe under the proposed conditions of use. The anticipated intake levels and the proposed use were not considered to be nutritionally disadvantageous. This assessment represents the opinion of the FSA and FSS.
